Bilingual – A cultural upbringing translates to fashion
Bringing to us a world of culture and color without borders or boundaries, Bilingual combines the luxury of satin and chiffon silks with dramatic, bold prints. As Alexandra Morra, contributing writer for The Daily News, reviewed during the May 2005 Bilingual trunk show, “I’m impressed by the prints and striking colors. Bilingual transports me to a another world!” The rich color combinations wake us to a heavenly pink sunrise against a blue lagoon in Bali or surrounds us by calming, green palm trees against the sapphire oceans in Baja. After seeing the LUCKY Magazine’s mentions in October, Mercedes Gonzalez, owner of buying office, The Global Purchasing Group, remarked, “Bilingual is a great line for every woman. The comfortable bodies and eye-catching colors can be thrown on with flip flops for an afternoon shopping or strappy sandals for a sexy night in Soho!”
Bilingual is a celebration of designer Jacqueline Floro’s influential surroundings including her small town background, her world travels, and her present home in New York City. Growing up in the small town in Amherst, Ohio in the 80’s, Floro’s only exposure to the allure and mystery of travel abroad was the “European” make-up she bought at the local drug store. After she had lived in both Madrid and Paris, she craved the big city and moved to New York. She started her career at a lingerie design company, Natori, and continued to gain more experience at Polo Ralph Lauren and New York & Company in sales, merchandising/buying, public relations and production. An opportunity at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter presented itself, further developing her business, analytical and language skills. Upon leaving the firm, she bought a backpack and set off to explore her roots in South East Asia. After months of being alone in the rice fields of Indonesia, exploring the flea markets in Thailand, and getting lost in silk farms in Cambodia, the richness of color, elements of textile, and fascination of design, instantly inspired her. She knew she belonged back in the fashion industry where her career began. In time, Bilingual was born.
